After much consideration, the Board of the Directors decided that, after 22 years, it is time to close the Second Chance League (SCL).

Founded in 2003 to evaluate, foster, train, and rehome sled dogs exclusively from the Fairbanks North Star Borough animal shelter, the Second Chance League helped bring love and joy–and a second chance–to hundreds of sled dogs and the humans whose lives they enriched. None of this would have been possible without the countless mushers, skijorers, and dog lovers who helped us rescue more than 500 sled dogs by fostering or adopting dogs, donating to SCL, serving on the board, or otherwise volunteering time. From the bottom of our very full hearts, we thank you.

While SCL’s long and fruitful organizational life may be coming to an end, there will always be dogs in need and organizations working tirelessly to improve their lives. To that end, we decided to donate our remaining financial assets to four very deserving nonprofits: the Fairbanks Animal Shelter Fund, the Alaska Spay/Neuter Program, Alaska Rural Veterinary Outreach, and Alaska Native Rural Veterinary, Inc.

We encourage you to continue to support the Fairbanks North Star Borough animal shelter by adopting, fostering, or taking dogs on outings through the Tundra Tails to Trails program.
